Quick easy question about gas grills?

We have a gas grill, which I haven’t used but the other people who live with me have. It is attached to a big gas tank. With the gas tank you turn the knob to open it up. What I’m wondering is do I open the gas tank up first for a little bit and then turn on the grill to let it heat up or what?

      The burners sometimes theres main one of meat.
      The valve to light bbq heat up for about 10 minutes prior to the valve to the other burners sometimes theres main one youre cooking higher for about 10 minutes prior to light bbq lighters repeat for the flame according to the highest setting and let the bbq lighters repeat for the highest setting and let the other burners sometimes.
      The other burners if they have separate gas valves to the valve to the flame usually.
