Gas grill grates are starting to rust?

My gas grill is fairly new. However, the grates are beginning to rust in some places and it looks as if the protective coating is flaking off. I know that this means I should replace, but how dangerous is it to cook on in the meantime?

Heat should eliminate danger. Replacement is most likely unnecessary as long as the gill is holding up. Use a grill brush to remove any loose rust or coating. What you see flaking may be nothing more than old carbon buildup which is normal on any grill.

sounds like they are porcelain coated grates.. if so , wire brush off any loose porcelain and give the grates a coat of vegetable oil and heat your grill . this will season the exposed iron and food won’t be as prone to stick.

just brush it off and oil it down with some vegetable oil before you cook
