Can you store the small 1lb propane tanks for gas grills in your trunk overnight?

The Riggster asked:

I’m switching from charcoal to gas, and planning a tailgate party next month. The tailgating begins Saturday morning, however, we’re traveling Friday night and staying at a nearby hotel, so I’m wondering if it’s ok to keep the tank in my trunk Friday night, or what the best option is. Any tailgating/grilling/propane experts out there?
